1. Flight awards
You can book flight awards online at lufthansa.com or miles-and-more.com for flights with Aegean Airlines, Air Canada, Air China, Air Dolomiti, Air Malta, Air New Zealand, All Nippon Airways, Asiana Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Avianca, Brussels Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Croatia Airlines, EgyptAir, Ethiopian Airlines, Eurowings, Eurowings Discover, EVA Air, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Luxair, Olympic Air, Scandinavian Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways (does not apply to flights operated by Airlink), SWISS, TAP Portugal, Thai Airways, Turkish Airlines and United Airlines. Your local Miles & More Service Team will be happy to help you book flight awards with all other Miles & More airline partners.
A distinction is made between the following flight awards:
1.1 One-way flight award
It is also sometimes possible to book flight awards for a single route instead of round trip, known as one-way flight awards. You can find details about this under Redeem miles or via your local Miles & More Service Team.
1.2 Children’s flight awards and conditions for infants
Infants (up to the age of two years) travel with you free of charge (with the exception of taxes, fees and airline surcharges, which you will be required to pay), providing they do not occupy a seat.
In addition, for children between the ages of two and eleven years (up to their 12th birthday), there is a 25% reduction on the mileage required for a normal flight award. Children’s awards are only offered on flights operated by Austrian Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Eurowings, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Luxair and SWISS.
The booking of flight awards for children and infants is only permitted if the child or infant is accompanied by an adult during the flight.
1.3 Star Alliance flight awards
1.3.1 General terms and conditions
Within the framework of Star Alliance flight awards you can combine flights by Lufthansa and Star Alliance partners as well as other airline partners within one award. Exceptions to this are the special terms and conditions/special mileage amounts with selected Miles & More airline partners and the special terms.
The destinations and service classes available in the relevant regions are determined by the Lufthansa timetable and that of the other Miles & More airline partners applicable at the time of booking. The availability of flight awards may vary according to the date, season and destination. Individual awards may be unavailable at certain times.
Flight awards are always exclusive of taxes, fees and airline surcharges. These are invoiced separately. Please note that taxes, fees and airline surcharges in the USA may amount to as much as 1,000 dollars, depending on the service class booked (First/Business/Premium Economy/Economy).
Open-jaw flights (outward and return flight airports are not the same) are permitted. With regard to the number of miles required, half the mileage amount applies in each case. Further information about this is available from your local Miles & More Service Team.
1.3.2 Stopovers and connecting flights
Please consult your local Miles & More Service Team about the current terms and conditions for stopovers and connecting flights.
1.3.3 "Round the World" flight awards
A "Round the World" flight award ticket includes one crossing of the Atlantic and one crossing of the Pacific. There must be at least ten days between the commencement of the first and completion of the last long-haul flight.
A "Round the World" flight award ticket remains valid for twelve months from the date of issue. The final flight segment must be commenced no later than the last day of validity of the award.
You can obtain further terms and conditions for this flight award, such as the maximum number of segments and stopovers, from your local Miles & More Service Team. The booking of a “Round the World” flight award is only possible via your local Miles & More Service Team.
1.4 Reduced flight awards and upgrade awards
You can find information about reduced flight awards and upgrade awards in sections 3 and 4 of these terms and conditions.
2. Terms and conditions of booking
The following terms and conditions of booking apply to the booking of flight awards:
2.1 Redeeming miles
The number of miles required for your flight award is calculated based on a return flight in the selected award zone, the chosen service class (First, Business, Premium Economy or Economy) and the advance booking period. A one-way flight award (cf. section 1.1 of these terms and conditions) is calculated at 50% of the miles required for a return flight.
75% of the miles for a standard round-trip flight award are required for a flight award for children aged between two and eleven years (up to the age of 12 years, cf. section 1.2 of these terms and conditions). Infants who do not occupy a seat (cf. section 1.2 of these terms and conditions) only pay taxes, fees and airline surcharges.
The miles required for booking flight awards will be deducted from your mileage account once the booking is completed.
Any taxes, fees and airline surcharges incurred will be charged separately. Alternatively, for domestic and cross-border award flights in Europe (with the exception of Miles & More members resident in Poland) the taxes, fees and airline surcharges can also be settled in miles (with the exception of rebooking and cancellation charges, etc.).
You can also pay taxes, fees and airline surcharges using SEPA direct debit if you are resident in Germany and have a valid current account with a German banking institution.
2.2 Advance booking period and ticket validity
Your flight awards can be booked up to 361 days before the departure date required. Flight awards are valid up to twelve months from the date of issue.
Your flight award can be booked and issued up to two hours before departure (exception: up to two days before departure with Eurowings).
2.3 Rebooking, Cancellation
A charge of €50 per person and rebooking (or the equivalent value in a foreign currency) will be made for rebooking a flight award. You can only change the date and time of the flight when you rebook. It is not possible to change the route. Please note that rebookings may lead to additional costs or partial refunds for taxes, fees and airline surcharges.
In the event of a cancellation, you can choose between the following two alternatives:
2.3.1 Alternative 1
With the first alternative, only the taxes and fees are refunded. Miles and airline surcharges are not refundable. You do not incur any additional costs. If you have paid the taxes, fees and airline surcharges at a flat rate using miles, the airline surcharges are equivalent to 10,000 miles. This means that in the event of cancellation the amount paid in miles for taxes, fees and airline surcharges are reimbursed less an amount of 10,000 miles.
2.3.2 Alternative 2
In the second alternative, the miles and airline surcharges are refunded in addition to the taxes and fees. In return, you will be charged €50 per person and cancellation (or the equivalent value in a foreign currency). This type of refund will be made only at your express request.
At present, you can only cancel or (where permitted) rebook a flight award you have booked online via your local Miles & More Service Team.
Please note that in the event of the partial use of a flight award, taxes and fees will only be refunded pro rata. Miles will not be refunded. This also applies when you have paid the taxes, fees and airline surcharges at a flat rate using miles.
2.4 Transferability and booking for a third person
A flight award is not transferable once issued. According to section 2.4.8 of the Terms and conditions of participation, it is prohibited to sell, exchange or offer award documents for auction. Miles from different mileage accounts cannot be transferred or combined with each other, cf. also section 2.3.1 of the Terms and conditions of participation.
You can book flight awards for friends and family without accompanying them on the flight. Flight awards that are passed on to third persons must be booked by you personally. The relevant mileage amount will be deducted from your mileage account, cf. section 2.4.8 of the Terms and conditions of participation.
2.5 Special rules for status customers - Companion Award
Senators and HON Circle Members have the option of booking a Companion Award. With a Companion Award, the Miles & More member and the person accompanying them (companion) must complete the journey together. The companion will receive a reduction of 50% on the flight award. Companion Awards do not apply to reduced flight awards (such as Fly Smart and mileage bargains, for example) or children’s flight awards.
2.6 Tickets
You receive an electronic ticket when you book using flight awards.
2.7 Invoicing
Invoicing is not permitted.
3. Reduced flight awards
You have the option of booking reduced flight awards. These are Fly Smart awards, mileage bargains or other promotions for flight awards that may be offered. These are governed by the following terms and conditions. In addition, the terms and conditions of booking set out in section 2 apply, unless stipulated otherwise below.
3.1 General terms and conditions of booking for reduced flight awards
Reduced flight awards can only be booked if seats are available in the booking class relevant for reduced Miles & More flight awards on the desired route. Reduced flight awards are exclusive of taxes, fees and airline surcharges, i.e. these are calculated and charged to your credit card separately. Companion Awards for Senators and HON Circle Members are not available with reduced flight awards (see section 2.5 of these terms and conditions). This also applies to children’s flight awards and one-way flight awards (see sections 1.1 and 1.2 of these terms and conditions).
Reduced flight awards with connecting flights:
With connecting flights, the next available flight is always selected automatically. There is no free choice of connecting flight, even via your local Miles & More Service Team.
Rebooking / Cancellation:
Reduced flight awards cannot be rebooked. In the event of cancellation, the fees and taxes paid will be refunded. Miles and airline surcharges are not refunded. If you have paid the taxes, fees and airline surcharges at a flat rate using miles, the surcharges are equivalent to 10,000 miles. This means that in the event of cancellation, you will be reimbursed the number of miles paid, subject to a deduction of 10,000 miles.
Ticket validity:
The maximum ticket validity is one month from the commencement of your journey.
3.2. Fly Smart awards
Fly Smart awards can be acquired for fewer miles than regular flight awards and are therefore subject to special terms and conditions which you can view here. Fly Smart flight awards can only be booked online and are not subject to further reductions.
3.2.1. Terms and conditions of booking
Fly Smart flight awards can only be booked subject to availability. You can book online in Economy and Business Class (only European routes) for certain airlines and flight numbers, and only for routes for destinations included in the selection "Airports" in the online flight award booking. You can find the airlines and flight numbers here.
3.2.2. Advance booking period and ticket validity
Booking period:
Between two weeks and two working days before the desired departure date.
Minimum stay:
For Fly Smart awards within the zones Germany and Europe, your earliest possible return flight is the first Sunday after commencing your journey. With Fly Smart awards to intercontinental destinations, your minimum stay is seven days.
3.3 Mileage bargains
Mileage bargains are time-limited offers. They can only be booked on routes or for destinations advertised as a special offer in the relevant Miles & More media. You can find further information online here.
Please note that special terms and conditions apply to travel and booking periods for each mileage bargain. You can find more information on this here.
3.4 Other reduced flight awards
Other reduced flight awards which may be offered on miles-and-more.com are governed by the terms and conditions stated.
4. Upgrade awards
With upgrade awards, you can fly in a higher travel class with certain airlines, booking classes and flight numbers.
You can find the airlines, booking classes and flight numbers, together with information about whether online booking is available and other terms and conditions, here.
Upgrades cannot be redeemed with bookings for code-share flights and flight awards. Your reservation must take place under the flight number of the company operating the flight.
An upgrade with an infant is only possible with certain airlines. You can find it here.
All the terms and conditions that apply to the ticket originally issued also apply in conjunction with the booking of an upgrade award. An upgrade award in each case only applies to the route covered by a flight coupon for the ticket. An upgrade certificate is valid for a period of twelve months.
4.1 Terms and conditions of booking
You can only book an upgrade award to the next highest service class (except Economy to Business with Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS, Lufthansa and LOT Polish Airlines, even if Premium Economy is available). The amount of the upgrade award is determined by the booking class of the ticket. Please note: The mileage amounts stated apply to one route, i.e. one flight coupon. If more than one route/coupon is required for the journey, the mileage amounts are added together.
To qualify, you must be in possession of a fully paid flight, e.g. via lufthansa.com, for which the ticket has already been issued. Award tickets are excluded. Thus, all routes for which you intend to book an upgrade must have been confirmed in the lower service class beforehand. Upgrades can only be booked in Premium Economy Class, Business Class or First Class, subject to availability.
An upgrade is only possible on a domestic European flight in conjunction with an intercontinental Business Class upgrade and is then free of charge. Premium Economy upgrades with Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS and Lufthansa are generally only offered on intercontinental flights.
With an upgrade, a waiting list booking is also possible with Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS. Upgrades on group bookings are not always possible online. These can only be requested from your local Miles & More Service Team.
4.2 Advance booking period and payment
An upgrade can be booked for flights with Austrian Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, SWISS and Brussels Airlines up to threehours before departure, unless you have already checked in. This period may vary from destination to destination due to various factors (such as waiting periods, for example).
5. Other conditions
In addition to the aforementioned terms and conditions, the terms and conditions of participation (and the terms and conditions of carriage of the operating airline) always apply.
We are not obliged to take part in arbitration proceedings and unfortunately we are also unable to offer you the opportunity to participate in such proceedings.
