Hello, how can we help you?

Welcome to our simplified frequent flyer programme

Changes to the status programme: We would like to inform you that, from 1 January 2021, there will be some changes to our programme for frequent flyers. We have designed a transparent and easily understandable frequent flyer programme for you that rewards the loyalty of those passengers who choose to travel with our airlines again and again. These changes will not affect the Miles & More awards programme. The allocation of award miles will remain unchanged.

Programme changes from 2021 at a glance

  • A transparent points system will replace status and HON Circle miles

  • Those who are loyal to our brands will be rewarded

  • The earning period and period of validity will be consolidated to one year

  • We will be awarding lifetime Frequent Traveller and Senator status for loyalty

  • Complicated programme elements will be eliminated

Detailed overview of the programme changes

When do the changes come into effect?

The changes will apply to flights from 1 January 2021.

What will I earn?

Today Tomorrow
Today, you can earn a multitude of different types of miles: status miles, HON Circle miles, select miles, Status Stars points, flight segments and award miles. We want to reduce the different types of miles significantly and make them more transparent.

New:
In future, you will only earn points to achieve a frequent flyer status. Everything in the awards programme will remain as before. You will still earn award miles.

When will I start earning points and no longer earn status miles or HON Circle miles?
The new points system will apply to all flights operated from 1 January 2021 – irrespective of when you booked them. Example: time of booking March 2020, flight in February 2021 -> in this case you will already earn points.

How will I earn points?

Today Tomorrow
The amount of status miles or HON Circle miles you earn today depends on several factors. If you fly within Europe, you earn fixed mileage amounts depending on the booking class and the airline. For all other flights, the calculation is based on airline, booking class and distance. Additionally, status customers today receive an Executive Bonus of 25% on accrued status and HON Circle miles.

We want to create more transparency, and in particular, to reward those who fly with us numerous times.

New:
You will earn points on flights with Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS as well as Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti, Croatia Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Luxair (co-issuing Miles & More airline partners) and all other Star Alliance airlines. In future, only two criteria will be used to determine the amount of points earned: the travel class and whether it is a continental or intercontinental flight. The amount of points will be the same for all members, i.e. there will be no Executive Bonus in the new points system – but it will still apply to award miles.

You will find our points calculator further down on this page.

Further information about the points system can be found in our FAQs under 'How will the points system and qualification work?'

What will I need to achieve a status?

Today Tomorrow
Frequent Traveller
Until 31 December 2020, you will achieve Frequent Traveller status by earning 35,000 status miles or taking 30 flight segments within one calendar year. You can earn status miles on flights by Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS as well as Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti, Croatia Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Luxair (co-issuing Miles & More airline partners) and all other Star Alliance airlines. If you want to achieve Frequent Traveller status by the number of flight segments, that is only possible on flights operated by Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, SWISS and the co-issuing Miles & More airline partners.

Senator
Until 31 December 2020, you will achieve Senator status with 100,000 status miles within one calendar year. You can earn status miles on flights operated by Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS as well as the co-issuing Miles & More airline partners and the Star Alliance airlines.

HON Circle Member
Until 31 December 2020, you will become an HON Circle Member by earning 600,000 HON Circle miles within two calendar years. HON Circle miles can only be earned in Business Class and First Class on flights with Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS as well as with the co-issuing Miles & More airline partners.
We want to reward loyalty.

New:
In future, we will reward those who mainly fly with us. You will only be able to achieve or renew a status if you have earned a certain number of your points with the following airlines: Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS as well as Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti, Croatia Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Luxair (co-issuing Miles & More airline partners). Here, you will earn ‘qualifying points’.

Frequent Traveller
From 2021, you will achieve Frequent Traveller status with 160 points within one calendar year. At least 80 of these must be qualifying points.

Senator
In future, you will achieve Senator status with 480 points within one calendar year. At least 240 of these must be qualifying points.

HON Circle Member
If you wish to achieve HON Circle status in future, you will only require qualifying points – 1,500 to be precise.
You will earn these by flying with Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS as well as with the co-issuing Miles & More airline partners within one calendar year. Unlike the current situation, this will also apply to flights in Economy and Premium Economy Class.

You will find a full list of the points required for the various levels in our FAQs under 'How will the points system and qualification work?'

How long will my status be valid? Will there be any special rules?

Today Tomorrow
If you have qualified or requalified, your status was previously valid for at least two years and ended in the following February. Today, the qualifying period for Frequent Travellers and Senators is one calendar year, and two calendar years for HON Circle Members.
We are shortening the term to one year.

New:
If you achieve or renew your status on the basis of points from 1 January 2021, the term will be at least one year. It will start as soon as you have achieved your status and finish at the end of February in the year after next. The qualifying period for all levels will be one calendar year – even for HON Circle Members.

Switching from the old to the new system:

All qualifications or renewals achieved on the basis of miles up until 31 December 2020 will still retain their two-year term. The new term of at least one year will then apply to all Senators and Frequent Travellers who achieve or requalify for their status after that date. There will be a transitional arrangement for HON Circle Members because of the two-year qualifying period. You will find further information about the transitional rule in our FAQs under 'What is the transitional arrangement for HON Circle Members?'

What will no longer exist?

Today Tomorrow
Today, once you have earned above a certain number of select or HON Circle miles, you can actively choose additional select benefits on the Miles & More website.

We want to be proactive in awarding benefits and reduce the complexity of the programme at the same time.

New:
Miles & More Selections will no longer be available in their current form from 1 January 2021. This will make it simpler for you. This is because in future, above a certain number of qualifying points per calendar year, you will receive additional benefits automatically, without any action neccessary on your part:

Frequent Traveller

Mileage exchange at 200 qualifying points

Senator

  • 2 eVoucher at 700 qualifying points
  • 15,000 award miles at 1,000 qualifying points
  • Frequent Traveller partner card at 1,300 qualifying points

HON Circle Member

  • 2 eVoucher at 1,800 qualifying points
  • 30,000 award miles at 2,100 qualifying points
  • 2 eVoucher at 2,400 qualifying points
  • Frequent Traveller partner card at 2,700 qualifying points
  • Senator partner card at 3,000 qualifying points

Today, we award you Status Stars depending on your status membership. You can see these on your service card, for example. Here the number of Status Stars is determined by Status Stars points, which are awarded depending on the respective status level for each day of membership. As a Status Stars holder, you also get access to exclusive events. We want to eliminate complicated programme elements.

New:
There will be no more Status Stars and Status Stars points in future. These will therefore no longer be visible on your card or the online channels. You will still have access to exclusive events.

In future, we will continue to reward long-term membership and are therefore introducing lifetime Frequent Traveller and Senator status.

Recognition of Status Stars points to obtain Frequent Traveller Lifetime or Senator Lifetime:
Of course, we are aware that you have already been flying with us for some time. We will therefore convert the Status Stars points that you have accrued up until 31 December 2020 into qualifying points so you can obtain Frequent Traveller Lifetime or Senator Lifetime.

Conversion factor: two Status Stars points will be equivalent to one qualifying point. All frequent flyers with four or five Status Stars will thus be awarded Senator Lifetime at the beginning of 2021. You will receive Frequent Traveller Lifetime if you have already achieved three Status Stars by the end of 2020.

JetFriends

Today Tomorrow
Children and young people (under 18 years of age) can also become members of the Miles & More programme and register with JetFriends – the children’s and youth programme of Lufthansa. They will therefore not only be addressed in an age-appropriate way, such as with their own JetFriends card, but they will also receive special benefits, for example their award miles will not expire until their 18th birthday. This means that a JetFriends member will also be able to qualify for a status. This will be no different from the familiar status programme – apart from the age-appropriate approach and a separate service card. We want to make the programme simpler – and that means for children and young people too.

New:
JetFriends will no longer exist in future. From 2021, children and young people will register as normal via Miles & More, and in this context, will also be able to qualify or requalify for a status. This will not disadvantage current JetFriends members. They will retain their award miles protection until they reach the age of 18 and will be able to use their existing JetFriends service card as usual.

Lu, Cosmo and Smilo will also remain. Children will be able to find exciting, flying-related content on the airline websites of Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines.

What changes are being made to privileges?

Today Tomorrow
You will find the current privileges for Frequent Travellers, Senators and HON Circle Members in the following table.

With the current two-year term, you receive two eVouchers when you achieve or renew your Senator status. As an HON Circle Member, you receive six eVouchers. You can use these for upgrades to a higher travel class.

Today, the Senator Premium Award is available to Senators and HON Circle Members.

There will be the following changes to privileges from 1 January 2021:

In future, you will receive two eVouchers when you achieve or renew your status as a Senator and as an HON Circle Member, four eVouchers. These can be used for upgrades to a higher travel class.

The Senator Premium Award is also being eliminated.

What new features are being introduced?

We want to especially reward long-term membership.

New:
If you earn 7,500 qualifying points over the years, we will grant you Frequent Traveller Lifetime.

If you then continue to earn points and reach 10,000 qualifying points and have also been a Senator or HON Circle Member for at least ten full calendar years, we will award you Senator Lifetime.

Recognition of Status Stars points to obtain Frequent Traveller Lifetime and Senator Lifetime:
Of course, we are aware that you have already been flying with us for some time. We will therefore convert the Status Stars points that you have accrued up until 31 December 2020 into qualifying points so you can obtain Frequent Traveller Lifetime or Senator Lifetime.

Conversion factor: two Status Stars points will be equivalent to one qualifying point. All frequent flyers with four or five Status Stars will thus be awarded Senator Lifetime at the beginning of 2021. You will receive Frequent Traveller Lifetime if you have already achieved three Status Stars by the end of 2020.

Get to know the new system with our points calculator

There are now only two criteria that determine the number of points and qualifying points earned on each flight segment: the distinction between continental or intercontinental flights and the travel class.

For both continental and intercontinental flights, first select which travel class you will be flying in. Then, in the next step, please enter how many flights you are planning with the airlines listed below.

Answers to the most frequently asked questions

Why is the status programme being changed?

We want to make travelling as personal, simple and pleasant as possible for you, so every one of your journeys becomes a positive experience. That is the aspiration of our new, modern premium concept.

Our status programme only met this requirement to a limited extent in recent years. Your wishes for simplification also reached us more and more frequently.

That is why we are now taking steps to revise our status programme. We want to design a transparent and easily understandable frequent flyer programme for you that rewards the loyalty of those passengers who choose to travel with our airlines again and again. In future, members will no longer have to spend a lot of time dealing with complicated rules and will be able to see at a glance what they have to do to achieve their status. They will be able to concentrate solely on what is important to them and enjoy their journey.

How will the points system and qualification work?

In future, you will earn points instead of status miles and HON Circle miles. Points can be earned on flights with many of our airline partners: Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS as well as Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti, Croatia Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Luxair – and all Star Alliance airlines.
In order to earn miles on a flight with Air Dolomiti, simply book your ticket on the Lufthansa fare in Economy Light, Economy Class, Economy Flex or Business Class.

Alongside points there will also be qualifying points. These are important if you wish to achieve Frequent Traveller, Senator or HON Circle status. You will be able to earn these on flights operated by Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS as well as Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti, Croatia Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Luxair – and on some LX codeshare flights operated by Edelweiss.

You will receive a specific number of points or qualifying points depending on your chosen travel class and whether you are taking a continental or intercontinental flight.

Our airline partners offer you different travel classes: Business Class and Economy Class, as well as First Class and Premium Economy Class where available. You can find your travel class on your booking confirmation or your boarding pass. Some of our airline partners may describe the travel classes differently. You can find details of the available travel classes on the website of the airline concerned.

Points per flight segment

Economy Class Premium Economy Class Business Class First Class
Continental flights 5 5 10 10
Intercontinental flights 15 20 50 70

Point values to achieve a status (per calendar year)

Frequent Traveller Senator HON Circle Member
Points 160 480
Qualifying points 80 240 1,500

You will also be able to earn points and qualifying points on train journeys with a Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa or SWISS flight number. There will also be defined maximum thresholds of points for qualification as a Frequent Traveller, Senator or HON Circle Member:

  • Frequent Traveller: 40 qualifying points
  • Senator: 120 qualifying points
  • HON Circle Member: 250 qualifying points

How can I identify continental or intercontinental flights?

A continental flight is a flight segment for which the departure and arrival airports are on the same continent. For example, if you fly with Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Barcelona, both the departure and arrival airports are within Europe and the flight therefore counts as a continental flight. Flights within Germany also count as continental flights.

An intercontinental flight is a flight segment for which the departure and arrival airports are on different continents. For example, if you fly with Lufthansa from Frankfurt to New York, the departure and arrival airports are on different continents (Europe and North America). The flight segment therefore counts as an intercontinental flight.

You can find a detailed list of the individual countries and regions allocated to continents here.

What is the transitional arrangement for HON Circle Members?

Special rules will apply to qualifications or renewals of HON Circle Member status in the transitional period between the old and the new system.

Qualification and requalification years 2019 and 2020 (existing HON Circle Members with a term to February 2021):
You will achieve or renew your status with 600,000 HON Circle miles as usual within the two calendar years up until 31 December 2020 and will obtain a term of two years until the end of February 2023.

Qualification and requalification years 2020 and 2021 (existing HON Circle Members with a term to February 2022):
You will earn HON Circle miles as usual in 2020. From 1 January 2021, you will be credited with points and qualifying points for your flights. HON Circle miles will then no longer exist.

There will now be two options:

Option 1:
In the calendar year 2021, you will earn at least 1,500 qualifying points and thus obtain HON Circle status until February 2023.

Option 2:
We will, of course, recognise the HON Circle miles you flew in 2020 and will convert them into qualifying points. This amount will then be added to the qualifying points you earn in 2021. If you reach a total of 3,000 qualifying points, you will obtain HON Circle Member status for two years up until February 2024.

Conversion factor: 200 HON Circle miles will be equivalent to one qualifying point. 300,000 HON Circle miles will thus be equivalent to 1,500 qualifying points.

Will the privilege package change for each status?

There will be the following changes to privileges from 1 January 2021:

In future, you will receive two eVouchers when you achieve or renew your status as a Senator and as an HON Circle Member, four eVouchers. These can be used for upgrades to a higher travel class.

The Senator Premium Award is being eliminated.

Will the Miles & More awards programme also be changing?

No, these changes will not affect the Miles & More awards programme. Award miles will continue to be allocated as before.
