Frequently asked questions
What is carbon offsetting?
To allow you to travel more sustainably, the Lufthansa Group gives you the option of offsetting your proportional share of the carbon emissions for your flight. Those carbon emissions can be partly reduced via the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The remainder is offset via contributions to high-quality climate protection projects from the Lufthansa Group’s portfolio of climate protection projects. The Lufthansa Group pledges to implement offsetting or reduction measures corresponding to those carbon emissions no later than six months after your flight.
How are carbon emissions calculated?
Calculating the flight-related carbon emissions per passenger
The Lufthansa Group offers travellers the opportunity to reduce their proportional share of a flight’s carbon emissions via the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), or to offset them by contributing to high-quality climate protection projects.
The per passenger carbon emissions are calculated based on a number of variables. In order to ensure that figure is as accurate as possible, the Lufthansa Group uses a calculator that was developed in collaboration with climate action organisation myclimate and is able to draw on a large database of historical flight data. The variables used to calculate carbon emissions per passenger include the route chosen, the average fuel consumption along this route, the travel class and the seat occupancy rate.
Non-carbon effects not taken into account
It’s not just greenhouse gas CO₂ that’s emitted when engines burn kerosene; other emissions such as water vapour, nitrogen oxides and very fine soot particles are also produced. These emissions are called non-carbon or non-CO₂ emissions.
According to the latest science, the overall impact of aviation on global warming isn’t limited to the effect of carbon emissions; non-CO₂ emissions can also affect the climate. This relates primarily to long-lasting vapour trails, which occur on a very low number of flights in very specific climatic conditions. These trails can have a warming or cooling effect on the atmosphere, depending on the conditions in which they occur.
As their precise impact on the climate has not yet been sufficiently researched, the Lufthansa Group doesn’t currently calculate non-carbon effects on top of the carbon emissions per passenger.
The Lufthansa Group is actively engaged in research that aims to improve understanding of non-carbon climate effects, and is also developing practicable processes to prevent them from occurring in the first place.
How does SAF reduce CO₂?
Sustainable aviation fuel is used to reduce flight-related carbon emissions. Rather than being derived from fossil fuels, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is made from renewable energy sources such as used cooking oils or agricultural waste. Compared to conventional kerosene, SAF cuts greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by at least 80%, and therefore directly reduces flight-related carbon emissions.
The raw material sourcing for the Lufthansa Group’s SAF doesn’t conflict with human or animal food production. In addition, those materials are subject to strict sustainability criteria that have been assessed by independent auditors. All sustainable aviation fuel used by the Lufthansa Group meets the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive 2 (RED II). The SAF included in the Lufthansa Group’s customer offers is purchased in addition to regulatory obligations, such as the Lufthansa Group’s European SAF quota, and used in the Group’s flight operations within six months of the corresponding flight.
How is carbon offset via high-quality climate protection projects?
The Group’s carbon offsetting works by collaborating with providers myclimate, ClimatePartner, SQUAKE and climate Austria to support high-quality climate protection projects around the world, thereby compensating for flight-related carbon emissions. These include the ecological restoration of moors in Germany, the provision of energy-saving cookers to people in African countries, and technical solutions such as storing CO₂ in concrete or in pyrolysis-based fertiliser known as biochar. All these projects deliver long-term benefits, either by reducing carbon emissions or removing them from the atmosphere. Climate protection projects outside of Europe are certified to the highest international standards, earning either “Gold Standard” or “Plan Vivo” certification. The impact and quality of local European climate protection projects are guaranteed by domestic quality standards such as “MoorFutures” certification or the CH VER guidelines.
Which carbon-offsetting packages can I choose?
You’ll be offered a range of carbon-offsetting packages. These differ in the percentage allocated to carbon reduction via sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with the remaining CO₂ being offset by contributions to high-quality climate protection projects. Each carbon-offsetting package always offsets 100% of your proportional share of the flight-related carbon emissions. The maximum amount of carbon that can be reduced through the use of SAF is 80%; with Eurowings PlanetBlu, the maximum is 50%.
Here’s an example for a flight from Frankfurt to Madrid
- Small carbon-offsetting package: 5% carbon reduction via SAF | 95% carbon offsetting via climate protection projects
- Medium carbon-offsetting package: 20% carbon reduction via SAF | 80% carbon offsetting via climate protection projects
- Large carbon-offsetting package: 80% carbon reduction via SAF | 20% carbon offsetting via climate protection projects
How many miles do I earn on a carbon-offsetting package?
It depends on the price (excluding VAT) of the carbon-offsetting package in question. If you’re not a Frequent Traveller, Senator or HON Circle Member, this amount is always multiplied by 4. For members with frequent flyer status, the factor depends on the airline operating the flight. The factor is 6 if the flight is operated by Air Canada, Air Dolomiti, All Nippon Airways, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, ITA Airways, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City, SWISS or United Airlines. The factor is 5 for Eurowings and all other Miles & More airline partners. For Award Flights and discounted flights within the travel industry, no miles will be credited – regardless of the selected carbon-offsetting package.
Do I get additional Points for a carbon-offsetting package and, if so, how many?
Yes, as long as the package includes a proportion of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) use. The number of additional Points you earn depends on the proportion of your chosen carbon-offsetting package allocated to carbon reduction via SAF. For example, if the carbon-offsetting package contains a 20% carbon reduction via SAF, you’ll get 20% more Points. If it contains a 50% carbon reduction via SAF, you’ll get 50% more Points. And if it contains an 80% carbon reduction via SAF (the maximum amount), then you’ll get 80% more Points. If, on the other hand, there’s no carbon reduction via SAF, then you won’t earn any additional Points. For Award Flights and discounted flights within the travel industry, no additional Points will be credited – regardless of the selected carbon-offsetting package.
Do I also get additional Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points for a carbon-offsetting package?
Yes. Generally, if Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points are credited in the usual way for your flight, you’ll also get additional Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points for the purchase of a carbon-offsetting package with SAF. Please note that the number of additional HON Circle Points earned is limited to a maximum of +20%, regardless of the carbon-offsetting package selected.
And any HON Circle Points awarded for carbon offsetting are only credited for flights in Business and First Class. For Award Flights and discounted flights within the travel industry, no additional Qualifying Points or HON Circle Points will be credited – regardless of the selected carbon-offsetting package.
Where do I find the credited Miles and Points in my Miles & More account?
The Miles and Points credited are assigned to the respective flight date in the overview of your activities. The credit is made within a few minutes of completing the payment process.
Can I set the proportion of the carbon-offsetting package allocated to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) myself?
No, you can only select from the available range of carbon-offsetting packages. These contain differing percentages of carbon reduction via SAF. The maximum amount that can be allocated to carbon reduction via SAF use is 80%; with Eurowings PlanetBlu, the maximum is 50%.
Can I cancel a carbon-offsetting package I’ve booked and get a refund?
No, your carbon-offsetting package is non-refundable.
Which of my flights will appear as available for carbon offsetting?
All flights in the current year (e.g. 2025) for which you have earned or redeemed miles will appear as available for retroactive carbon offsetting. This is regardless of whether the flight was with a Lufthansa Group airline or with a Miles & More airline partner. In the app, you can see whether carbon offsetting has already been applied to the flight (e.g. because you booked a Green Fare). On our website, however, you’ll only see flights that haven’t yet been offset.
Flights from previous years (e.g. 2024), routes operated by ground carriers under a flight number (bus and train), flights with airlines that are not Miles & More partners and flights where the service card number was not specified during booking will not be displayed.
For which of the displayed flights can I offset carbon?
All flights to which carbon offsetting has not yet been applied can be offset. You can offset a specific flight, a selection of the flights displayed or all flights at the same time. Flights for which the CO₂ has already been offset (e.g. by booking a Green Fare) cannot be offset again. Please note that any carbon offsetting you may have undertaken with a provider outside the Lufthansa Group won’t be recognised, and that the flight in question won’t be shown as offset.
I used to be able to just see flights from the current quarter. Why am I now only seeing all flights for the entire year?
Having introduced additional miles and Points for retroactive carbon offsetting, we want to maximise the window within which you can receive these additional miles and Points. This wouldn’t have been possible if the app only showed the current quarter.
Will I get an invoice for my carbon-offsetting package?
It is not possible to issue a standard invoice. However, you will receive confirmation of the amount paid in euros (or Swiss francs) for your carbon-offsetting package. As miles are not a currency, we cannot issue an invoice for miles redeemed for carbon offsetting.
Will I get a receipt for my donation?
We don’t issue donation receipts. You’ll merely receive confirmation of payment for the contribution you’ve made.
If you’re a Miles & More member but not a Frequent Traveller, Senator or HON Circle Member, the price of the respective carbon-offsetting package (without VAT) will always be multiplied by a factor of 4.
You can offset your flight-related carbon emissions retroactively in the Miles & More app or at www.miles-and-more.com. You can retroactively offset carbon emissions for any flight from the current calendar year that is displayed in the app or at www.miles-and-more.com. The offer entitling you to additional Points, Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points is only valid when you book carbon-offsetting packages that include a proportion of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The carbon-offsetting package description will tell you whether it includes SAF. The number of additional Points, Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points is calculated based on the carbon-offsetting package selected and the percentage allocated to carbon reduction via SAF (e.g. offsetting package with 20% carbon reduction through SAF = +20% Points, Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points). The maximum amount that can be allocated to carbon reduction via SAF use is 80%; with Eurowings PlanetBlu, the maximum is 50%. Additional Points can be earned on flights with Lufthansa Group airlines, co-issuing airline partners and Star Alliance airlines. Additional Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points can only be earned on flights with Lufthansa Group airlines and co-issuing airline partners. Irrespective of the carbon-offsetting package selected, the number of additional HON Circle Points is limited to a maximum of +20% HON Circle Points. Additional HON Circle Points can only be credited for carbon offsetting when you fly Business or First Class. After your flight, the additional Points, Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points will be credited to your Miles & More account for the year in which the flight took place.
