Frequently asked questions

What is a CO₂-saving contribution?

To help make travelling more sustainable, the Lufthansa Group offers passengers the opportunity to contribute to reducing the impact of future flights on the climate. Firstly, by saving CO₂ emissions via the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), and secondly, by removing or avoiding CO₂ emissions through their support of high-quality climate protection projects. Combined, your contribution corresponds to the estimated CO₂ emissions of your flight. There may be other emissions that have an impact on the climate. The Lufthansa Group guarantees that the necessary SAF will be used in Lufthansa Group flight operations within six months of the respective flight.

How are the CO₂ emissions determined?

Determining the flight-related CO₂ emissions per passenger

Burning kerosene in engines creates carbon dioxide, more commonly known as CO₂, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. The Lufthansa Group offers travellers the opportunity to contribute to saving CO₂ emissions from future flights and to support the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) as well as high-quality climate protection projects.

The per passenger CO₂ emissions are estimated based on a number of variables. In order to ensure that the figure is as accurate as possible, the Lufthansa Group uses a data-based model that was developed in collaboration with climate action organisation myclimate and is able to draw on a large database of historical flight data. The variables used to determine CO₂ emissions per passenger include the route chosen, the average fuel consumption along this route, the travel class and the seat occupancy rate.

Non-CO₂ effects not taken into account

It’s not just greenhouse gas CO₂ that’s emitted when engines burn kerosene; other emissions such as water vapour, nitrogen oxides and very fine soot particles are also produced. These emissions are called non-CO₂ emissions.

According to the latest science, the overall impact of aviation on global warming isn’t limited to the effect of CO₂ emissions; non-CO₂ emissions can also affect the climate. This relates primarily to long-lasting vapour trails, which occur on a very low number of flights in very specific climatic conditions. These trails can have a warming or cooling effect on the atmosphere, depending on the conditions in which they occur.

As their precise impact on the climate has not yet been sufficiently researched, the Lufthansa Group doesn’t currently determine non-CO₂ effects on top of the CO₂ emissions per passenger.

The Lufthansa Group is actively engaged in research that aims to improve the understanding of non-CO₂ climate effects, and is also developing practicable processes to prevent them from occurring in the first place.

How does SAF save CO₂?

Rather than being derived from fossil fuels, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is made from renewable energy sources such as used cooking oils or agricultural waste. While SAF causes CO₂ emissions similar to those produced by conventional kerosene, its greenhouse gas emissions are at least 80% lower over the entire life cycle. To make a CO₂-saving contribution that corresponds to your estimated flight-related CO₂ emissions, we calculate your fuel consumption based on the estimated CO₂ emissions and ensure that exactly this amount of SAF is used on future Lufthansa Group flights.

The sustainable aviation fuels used as part of the Green Fares and CO₂-saving packages are purchased by the Lufthansa Group in addition to the current EU regulatory SAF quota of 2%, the costs of which are already included in the ticket price, and are used in the Lufthansa Group’s flight operations within six months of the corresponding flight. The raw materials used to produce SAF do not conflict with food or animal feed and are subject to strict sustainability criteria. These criteria are set out in the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) and the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation and are checked by independent auditors.

SAF currently accounts for less than 1% of aviation fuel used worldwide and costs about three to five times as much as fossil fuel. The Lufthansa Group is involved in numerous projects to make sustainable aviation fuels available as soon as possible in larger quantities.

How is CO₂ saved via high-quality climate protection projects?

The Lufthansa Group supports climate protection projects around the world in collaboration with myclimate, ClimatePartner, SQUAKE, Ceezer and climate Austria. These include the ecological restoration of moors in Germany, the provision of energy-saving cookers to people in African countries, and technical solutions such as storing CO2 in concrete or in pyrolysis-based fertiliser known as biochar. All these projects deliver benefits over the long term, either by saving CO₂ emissions or by removing them from the atmosphere. Since these projects have complex ecological and social interdependences, the precise extent of their CO₂-saving effect will naturally vary. By selecting carefully reviewed projects, we can ensure that your support makes a positive contribution to climate protection. Climate protection projects outside of Europe are certified to the highest international standards, earning either “Gold Standard” or “Plan Vivo” certification. The impact and quality of local European climate protection projects are guaranteed by domestic quality standards such as “MoorFutures” certification or the CH VER guidelines.

Your contribution not only helps with climate protection, but also contributes to improving biodiversity and creating better living conditions for the local people.

I don’t want to book a Green Fare, but I would like to make a CO₂-saving contribution for my flight. Can I do this when booking the flight?

Yes, if the fare you book at austrian.com, brusselsairlines.com, lufthansa.com or swiss.com isn’t a Green Fare, you can add a CO₂-offsetting package during the last step of the booking process. You’ll find it in the section where you can add an advance seat reservation or an additional piece of checked baggage to your booking. If you book a Green Fare, this option will, of course, no longer be displayed.

When will the additional Miles and Points for a Green Fare be credited?

The additional Miles and Points are generally credited at the same time as the usual Miles and Points earned on your flight.

How can I tell if the additional Miles and Points for a Green Fare have been credited?

The additional Miles and Points for each flight will be listed separately in your Miles & More account.

Will I also get additional Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points for a Green Fare?

Yes, if Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points are credited in the usual way for your flight, you’ll generally also get additional Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points for the CO₂ offsetting. HON Circle Points are only credited for flights in Business and First Class.

Will I also earn additional Miles and Points when booking a Green Fare on train services?

No, the additional Points and Miles for booking a Green Fare do not apply to travel with Austrian AIRail, Lufthansa Express Rail or SWISS Air Rail.
