Frequently asked questions
What is a CO₂-saving contribution?
To help make travelling more sustainable, the Lufthansa Group offers passengers the opportunity to contribute to reducing the impact of future flights on the climate. Firstly, by saving CO₂ emissions via the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), and secondly, by removing or avoiding CO₂ emissions through their support of high-quality climate protection projects. Combined, your contribution corresponds to the estimated CO2 emissions of your flight. There may be other emissions that have an impact on the climate. The Lufthansa Group guarantees that the necessary SAF will be used in Lufthansa Group flight operations within six months of the respective flight.
How are the CO₂ emissions determined?
Calculating the flight-related CO₂ emissions per passenger
The Lufthansa Group offers travellers the opportunity to reduce their proportional share of a flight’s CO₂ emissions via the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), or to offset them by contributing to high-quality climate protection projects.
The per passenger CO₂ emissions are calculated based on a number of variables. In order to ensure that figure is as accurate as possible, the Lufthansa Group uses a calculator that was developed in collaboration with climate action organisation myclimate and is able to draw on a large database of historical flight data. The variables used to calculate CO₂ emissions per passenger include the route chosen, the average fuel consumption along this route, the travel class and the seat occupancy rate.
Non-CO₂ effects not taken into account
It’s not just greenhouse gas CO₂ that’s emitted when engines burn kerosene; other emissions such as water vapour, nitrogen oxides and very fine soot particles are also produced. These emissions are called non-CO₂ emissions.
According to the latest science, the overall impact of aviation on global warming isn’t limited to the effect of CO₂ emissions; non-CO₂ emissions can also affect the climate. This relates primarily to long-lasting vapour trails, which occur on a very low number of flights in very specific climatic conditions. These trails can have a warming or cooling effect on the atmosphere, depending on the conditions in which they occur.
As their precise impact on the climate has not yet been sufficiently researched, the Lufthansa Group doesn’t currently calculate non-CO₂ effects on top of the CO₂ emissions per passenger.
The Lufthansa Group is actively engaged in research that aims to improve understanding of non-CO₂ climate effects, and is also developing practicable processes to prevent them from occurring in the first place.
How does SAF save CO₂?
Rather than being derived from fossil fuels, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is made from renewable energy sources such as used cooking oils or agricultural waste. While SAF causes CO₂ emissions similar to those produced by conventional kerosene, its greenhouse gas emissions are at least 80% lower over the entire life cycle. To make a CO₂-saving contribution that corresponds to your estimated flight-related CO₂ emissions, we calculate your fuel consumption based on the estimated CO₂ emissions and ensure that exactly this amount of SAF is used on future Lufthansa Group flights.
The sustainable aviation fuels used as part of the Green Fares and CO₂-saving packages are purchased by the Lufthansa Group in addition to the current EU regulatory SAF quota of 2%, the costs of which are already included in the ticket price, and are used in the Lufthansa Group’s flight operations within six months of the corresponding flight. The raw materials used to produce SAF do not conflict with food or animal feed and are subject to strict sustainability criteria. These criteria are set out in the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) and the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation and are checked by independent auditors.
SAF currently accounts for less than 1% of aviation fuel used worldwide and costs about three to five times as much as fossil fuel. The Lufthansa Group is involved in numerous projects to make sustainable aviation fuels available as soon as possible in larger quantities.
How is CO₂ saved via high-quality climate protection projects?
The Lufthansa Group supports climate protection projects around the world in collaboration with myclimate, ClimatePartner, SQUAKE, Ceezer and climate Austria. These include the ecological restoration of moors in Germany, the provision of energy-saving cookers to people in African countries, and technical solutions such as storing CO2 in concrete or in pyrolysis-based fertiliser known as biochar. All these projects deliver benefits over the long term, either by saving CO₂ emissions or by removing them from the atmosphere. Since these projects have complex ecological and social interdependences, the precise extent of their CO₂-saving effect will naturally vary. By selecting carefully reviewed projects, we can ensure that your support makes a positive contribution to climate protection. Climate protection projects outside of Europe are certified to the highest international standards, earning either “Gold Standard” or “Plan Vivo” certification. The impact and quality of local European climate protection projects are guaranteed by domestic quality standards such as “MoorFutures” certification or the CH VER guidelines.
Your contribution not only helps with climate protection, but also contributes to improving biodiversity and creating better living conditions for the local people.
Which CO₂-saving packages can I choose?
You can choose between a range of CO₂-saving packages. These differ in the proportion allocated to CO₂ saving via sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with the remaining CO₂ being offset by contributions to high-quality climate protection projects. Each package always offsets 100% of your estimated flight-related CO₂ emissions. The maximum amount of CO₂ that can be saved through the use of SAF is 80%; with Eurowings PlanetBlu, the maximum is 50%.
Here’s an example for a flight from Frankfurt to Madrid
- Small package: 5% CO₂ saving via SAF | 95% CO₂ offsetting via climate protection projects
- Medium package: 20% CO₂ saving via SAF | 80% CO₂ offsetting via climate protection projects
- Large package: 80% CO₂ saving via SAF | 20% CO₂ offsetting via climate protection projects
How many miles will I earn for a CO₂-saving package?
It depends on the price (excluding VAT) of the package in question. If you’re not a Frequent Traveller, Senator or HON Circle Member, this amount is always multiplied by 4. For members with frequent flyer status, the factor depends on which airline operated the flight. The factor is 6 if the flight is operated by Air Canada, Air Dolomiti, All Nippon Airways, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, ITA Airways, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City, SWISS or United Airlines. The factor is 5 for Eurowings and all other Miles & More airline partners.
Will I get additional Points for a CO₂-saving package and, if so, how many?
Yes, as long as the package includes a proportion of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) use. The number of additional Points you earn depends on the proportion of your chosen package allocated to CO₂ saving via SAF. If, for example, the package contains a 20% CO₂ saving via SAF, you’ll get 20% more Points. If it contains a 50% CO₂ saving via SAF, you’ll get 50% more Points. And if it contains an 80% CO₂ saving via SAF (the maximum amount), then you’ll get 80% more Points. If, on the other hand, there’s no CO₂ saving via SAF, then you won’t earn any additional Points.
Will I also get additional Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points for a CO₂-saving package?
Yes, if Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points are credited in the usual way for your flight, you’ll generally also get additional Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points for purchasing a package with SAF. Please note that the number of additional HON Circle Points credited is limited to a maximum of 20%, regardless of the package selected. HON Circle Points are also only awarded for flights in Business Class and First Class.
Where do I find the credited Miles and Points in my Miles & More account?
The Miles and Points credited are assigned to the respective flight date in the overview of your activities. The credit is made within a few minutes of completing the payment process.
Can I set the proportion of the CO₂-saving package allocated to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) myself?
No, you can only select from the available range of packages. Each of these contain a different proportion of CO₂ savings via SAF. The maximum amount that can be allocated to CO₂ saving via SAF is 80%; with Eurowings PlanetBlu, the maximum is 50%.
Can I cancel a CO₂-saving package so that I can get my money back?
No, booked CO₂-saving packages cannot be cancelled.
Which of my displayed flights are eligible for a contribution towards more sustainable flying?
All flights in the current year (e.g. 2025) for which you have earned or redeemed miles will appear as available for retroactive carbon offsetting. This is regardless of whether the flight was with a Lufthansa Group airline or with a Miles & More airline partner. In the app, you can see whether carbon offsetting has already been applied to the flight (e.g. because you booked a Green Fare). On our website, however, you’ll only see flights that haven’t yet been offset.
Flights from previous years (e.g. 2024), routes operated by ground carriers under a flight number (bus and train), flights with airlines that are not Miles & More partners and flights where the service card number was not specified during booking will not be displayed.
All flights displayed are eligible for a CO₂-saving contribution for the current year. Until the end of February, you’ll also see flights from the past year that are eligible for a CO₂-saving contribution. This is regardless of whether the flight was with a Lufthansa Group airline or with a Miles & More airline partner. In the app, you can see whether a contribution to more sustainable flying has already been made for the flight (e.g. by booking a Green Fare). On the other hand, our website only shows flights for which no contribution has yet been made.
Flights from previous years (e.g. 2024), routes operated by ground carriers under a flight number (bus and train), flights with airlines that are not Miles & More partners and all Award Flights and flights where the service card number was not specified during booking will not be displayed.
For which of my displayed flights can I make a contribution towards sustainable flying?
For all flights for which no contribution has yet been made. You can select a specific flight, a selection of the flights displayed or all flights at the same time. Flights for which a contribution has already been made (e.g. by booking a Green Fare) cannot be selected again. Please note that any CO₂-saving contribution you may have undertaken with a provider outside the Lufthansa Group won’t be recognised, and that the flight in question won’t be displayed.
I used to be able to just see flights from the current quarter. Why am I now only seeing all flights for the entire year?
Having introduced additional Miles and Points for retroactive CO₂-saving contributions, we want to maximise the window within which you can receive these additional Miles and Points. This wouldn’t have been possible if the app only showed the current quarter.
Who can use the offer to make a contribution to more sustainable flying?
The offer is aimed at private individuals.
Will I receive an invoice?
It is not possible to issue a standard invoice. However, you will receive confirmation of the amount paid in euros (or Swiss francs). As miles are not a currency, we cannot issue an invoice for miles redeemed.
Will I get a receipt for my donation?
We don’t issue donation receipts. You’ll merely receive confirmation of payment for the contribution you’ve made.
The number of miles you earn per package is calculated as follows: if you’re a Miles & More member, but not a Frequent Traveller, Senator or HON Circle Member, the price of the respective CO₂-saving package (excluding VAT) is always multiplied by a factor of 4. For members with frequent flyer status, the factor depends on the airline operating the flight. The factor is 6 if the flight is operated by Air Canada, Air Dolomiti, All Nippon Airways, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City, SWISS or United Airlines. The factor is 5 for Discover Airlines, Eurowings, Luxair and all other Miles & More airline partners.
The offer entitling you to additional Points, Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points only applies to CO₂-saving packages that include a percentage of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) use. The Green Fare or CO₂-saving package description will tell you whether it includes SAF. With each package, the additional Points, Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points are calculated based on the package selected and the proportion allocated to CO₂ saving via SAF (e.g. a package with 20% CO₂ saving via SAF = 20% more Points, Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points). The maximum amount that can be allocated to CO₂ saving via SAF is 80%; with Eurowings PlanetBlu, the maximum is 50%. You’ll earn additional Points on flights with Lufthansa Group airlines, co-issuing airline partners and Star Alliance airlines. Additional Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points can only be earned on flights with Lufthansa Group airlines and co-issuing airline partners. Irrespective of the package selected, the number of additional HON Circle Points is limited to a maximum of 20%. Additional HON Circle Points can only be earned in Business Class and First Class. After your flight, the additional Points, Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points will be credited to your Miles & More account for the year in which the flight took place.
On the Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Lufthansa and SWISS websites, you can add a CO₂-saving package when booking your flight or until shortly before departure.
For past flights, you can book CO₂-saving packages in the Miles & More app or at miles-and-more.com. You can do this for any flight from the current calendar year that is displayed in the app or at miles-and-more.com.
Green Fares are available in all travel classes on nearly all flights operated by Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines, Edelweiss, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City, Lufthansa CityLine and SWISS.
