The training centre for disadvantaged school leavers in Togo, West Africa, is close to many people’s hearts. It’s not just an important project for Miles & More and local people, but also for help alliance project manager Laura Single. Her involvement in the centre’s construction began when the foundations were laid in 2021. Like everyone involved, she’s deservedly proud of the project. The grand opening took place in February 2024.

Togo is one of the poorest countries in the world. The economy is suffering from a shortage of skilled workers, but young people are still having difficulty finding an apprenticeship or a job. What’s missing is a vocational training system geared towards real needs with qualified teaching staff and well-equipped schools. That’s where the Miles & More and help alliance project comes in. “We wanted to create a training centre where socially disadvantaged young people could receive modern vocational training. Getting a sound education is the only way for them to take the first step out of poverty,” says Laura Single. The help alliance project manager has been involved in the initiative since day one.

Laura Single is very pleased with the project. “Despite all the obstacles such as Covid, supply difficulties, rising material costs and administrative hurdles, we always stayed on the ball, and the construction of the training centre made steady progress. We’re thrilled that it’s now finished.” Laura Single lived in South Africa for a long time, so she feels a bond with the people of Africa and understands their mentality. This and the committed local team, led by volunteer Jean Adavedi, greatly contributed to the project’s success, as did your mileage donations. These were vital for funding the project, so thank you.

There was still a lot to do before the grand opening in February 2024. All of the rooms still had to be furnished with desks and chairs, railings and balustrades had to be fitted, and all the IT equipment needed to be acquired. Laura Single stresses how important it is to recruit suitable teaching staff. She puts great emphasis on professionalism in this regard. “This is vital to the long-term success of this school and the trainees’ career prospects.” You can help with a mileage donation.
